Emergent Learning: Before and After Action Reviews

If learning is fundamentally about continually expanding our capacity to create the future to which we aspire, then by definition our learning must evolve as that future emerges. Emergent Learning is about designing a process to enable groups to continue to learn from their experiences, as that experience unfolds.

This tool introduces the concept of emergent learning or learning that emerges from the work itself to surface, capture, and employ those insights to inform future work. It includes After Action Review (AAR) and Before Action Review (BAR), which are designed to help leaders engage with each other at the beginning of a project or initiative and during the work itself, as often as needed, to reflect and adjust their thinking along the way.
